Zach Ertz is a Philadelphia Eagle for the first time since 2021! Ertz is 11 catches away from breaking Harold Carmichael’s record for most receptions in Philadelphia Eagles history. Ertz rejoins the last two remaining members of the Eagles 2018 Super Bowl team, Lane Johnson and Jake Elliot to relieve injury woes suffered by Dallas Goedert.
When Goedert went down against the Titans, Philadelphia was quickly introduced to Johnny Mundt. Mundt, much to my surprise, is in his tenth year in the NFL and a respected blocking tight end. However, Mundt’s abilities as a pass-catcher leaves much to be desired.
This would have been rookie Eli Stowers time to shine, but he’s sidelined until at least week 5 with a quad and hamstring issue. The TE2 position for the Eagles has been a problem for sometime. Last year we thought Kylen Granson could be a solution, he was not. Grant Calcaterra was given a shocking amount of time to develop into an NFL tight end, he did not. We even had a guy named Jack Stoll.
Since Zach Ertz’s departure, the Eagles have lacked a functional second pass-catching tight end and Dallas Goedert has not played every game in a season since his rookie year. I am not naive enough to ignore the value of blocking-first tight ends, however I am thrilled about the position that the Eagles are in for their tight end room for the remainder of the 2026 Season.
The Eagles have had an incredible run of starting tight ends in the 21st century. Brent Celek missed one Eagles game from 2007 to 2017, Celek was an Eagles-lifer and rode off into the sunset after the Birds won the Super Bowl in his 11th year. He was a reliable pass-catcher and an efficient blocker. Halfway through Celek’s career Ertz gets drafted and they go together like crab fries and warm American Cheese. Celek’s speed declines and he leans more into blocking as Ertz proves himself to be a Pro Bowler. Then, at what Howie Roseman thought would be halfway through Ertz’s career, 2018 the Eagles bring in Dallas Goedert. Goedert learns from Ertz and then the Bird’s move on from Ertz.
Only for Ertz to somehow play into his 13th year, long enough to step into relief when Goedert goes down in week 2 of the 2026 season.
Currently playing tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles are numbers 2 and 5 on the franchise’s all-time reception list and numbers 7 & 8 on the all-time franchise touchdown list in Dallas Goedert and Zach Ertz. Learning alongside two of the greatest Eagles Tight Ends of All-Time is rookie tight end Eli Stowers. There’s a possibility that in week 10 of this NFL season, we are going to see Ertz, Stowers, and Goedert on the field together at the same exact time.
I’m sad Goedert went down, but I am thrilled about the situation it has caused.
