Lincoln Financial Field Renamed “Philadelphia Stadium” for World Cup

According to a 2024 Axios story Lincoln Financial Field will be called “Philadelphia Stadium” because “only official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup can display their corporate names during the tournament.”

Footage has emerged of these changes being made at nearby MetLife Stadium, or as it is to be known “New York New Jersey Stadium.”

No American Stadium retained their name for the tournament because all of them are corporately sponsored. Only BC Place, Estadio Monterrey, and Estadio Azteca are able to display their names for the World Cup.

It’s unlikely that Lincoln Financial Field will remodel for the World Cup until April 26th. According to the official Lincoln Financial Field schedule the two events before the World Cup are Monster Jam and Monster Energy AMA Supercross. (It’s rare that you get two monsters in one sentence in earnest)

What is Lincoln Financial?

Lincoln Financial, the sponsor of the football stadium, will likely want to advertise their “new fixed indexed annuities” to the people who paid to see “12,000lb trucks stand on two wheels and fly through the air.”

The stadium crew has 49 days to take the field from being suited for “the world’s elite off-road motorcycle racers as they clash in high-flying stadium battles” to being compliant with FIFA’s field standards.

This June soccer fans will not be reminded of whatever Lincoln Financial does. They will take the Broad Street Line to “Philadelphia Stadium!” It sounds like the name of a stadium in an off-brand video game. Likely sometime in May the words “Lincoln Finacial Field” will not be displayed in lights on the outside.

The Athletic reported NJTransit is “preparing to charge riders more than $100 for round-trip tickets between New York Penn Station and the Meadowlands.” It’ll be worth watching to see if SEPTA does anything similar.

The Linc’s Signs Change

UPDATE – 5/30/26: Earlier this week all of the necessary branding changes were made at Philadelphia Stadium. The stadium will not be referred to as “Lincoln Financial Field” until Shane Gillis comes to town on July 17th.

SEPTA stepped up to the plate by not inflating ticket prices, tailgating is permitted, and the tourism boom may not be what it was advertised – which could lead to cheaper tickets. Philadelphia might just be the place to be for the World Cup!

NJTransit charging $150 for train tickets and MetLife banning tailgating is unfathomable to the Philadelphian mind.
