Birds Swap Patullo for Mannion, What Does That Mean for the Offense?

Written by:

Firing Kevin Patullo was a step in the right direction for the Eagles offense in 2026. Utilizing an offense with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith and Jalen Hurts, the way that he did should’ve been a fireable offense after week 6.

Can the next offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles actually step it up? Kevin Patullo’s treatment may have scared some candidates away. Is it possible that Nick Siranni is also a part of the problem?

Can Nick Siranni change his ways and let the front office have more of an influence on who should run the offense? Everyone was clamoring for Mike McDaniel, but he took the job with the Los Angeles Chargers

So why didn’t anyone want the Eagles offensive coordinator job? Well step on down Sean Mannion and we appreciate you taking on the challenge. Let’s get to know him.

Mannion was a third round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft. Mannion was a career backup for nine seasons. Similar to Kellen Moore, Mannion was a successful quarterback in college when he played for Oregon State.

Was Mannion a good risk?

Mannion has skyrocketed towards an Offensive Coordinator position. An Offensive Assistant with the Green Bay Packers in 2024, the Quarterbacks Coach in 2025 with the same team and now the Eagles OC in 2026.

Overview of Mannion

Mannion has worked with some offensive geniuses during his career. In 2017, the Rams hired Sean McVay as Head Coach and Matt LeFleur as Offensive Coordinator. The next season with the Rams, current Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor was the Quarterbacks Coach. Mannion signed with the Vikings in 2019 and got to learn under Klint Kubiak, Gary Kubiak and Kevin Stefanski. A well studied quarterback, who if he does well, could end up moving into a head coaching position similar to Kellen Moore. Mannion’s hire could also mean the Eagles are looking to elevate the passing game, cater more towards Jalen Hurts’ strengths and return to the 2024-2025 offensive unit that at times seemed unstoppable.

Other coaching woes

The Eagles survived Vic Fangio’s thoughts of retirement for the 2026 season. On Wednesday February 4th, offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland stepped down, with rumors of no longer seeing eye to eye with the organization, specifically Nick Sirianni. This move came as a shock, especially with an offensive line that struggled last season. Along with the possibility of losing a leader like Lane Johnson to retirement this offseason.

Less power for Sirianni

Mannion has been given the task to start rebuild the offensive coaching staff, showing that the Eagles believe in him as their guy. The team ranked 24th in total offense in the 2025 season compared to 2024 when they ranked 8th in the league. This is a crucial season coming up, which feels strange to say for a team that won a Super Bowl 12 months ago. But with all sports and life lately, things change fast and championship windows can open and shut as soon as the tiniest thing goes wrong, whether that be a player’s attitude in the locker room or injuries to key players. We’ve seen that Howie Roseman isn’t afraid to make changes when they’re needed, drafting Jalen Hurts, with Wentz still as the starter and replacing Doug Pederson with Nick Sirianni. If things don’t turn around this season, you could always look in the past and see the last time the Eagles hired a quarterbacks coach from Green Bay, that man ended up winning the most games as head coach in Eagles history.
