“Camden Bop” by 2Rare is a song that is just 98 seconds of pure joy! This fast-paced Jersey club rework of Fantasia’s “When I See U” is a perfect transition song in the club for DJ’s to turn the night up.
2Rare is one of Philly’s most successful young rappers and he’s consistently been tweaking his brand and style as he grows into a standout rap star. “Camden Bop” is a song that warms my heart because Camden rarely gets recognition from Philadelphians, despite it being closer to Center City than the Northeast or parts of West Philly.
Camden is Philly’s sister city, with its own unique nuances and issues. This summer both 2Rare and Philly streamer/rapper Raud dropped songs acknowledging the “Camden Bop.”
Raud says “I’m not in Camden but I’m boppin it” in Boppin’ It and 2Rare starts his hit off with “I ain’t from Camden but I learned how to bop today.”
Both Raud and 2Rare come from the “Tangin” scene in Philly hip-hop. Both have viral videos of themselves dancing wildly in the city’s style. As both artists have developed they’ve become some of the leading voices in discussing East-Coast Regional Hip-Hop dance moves.
Their acknowledgement and odes to Camden’s dance scene and the Jersey club scene is a tip-of-the-hat from across the Ben Franklin Bridge.
