Song of the Week: MAD! by Maahsa

This week’s song of the week is “MAD!” by Maahsa, which is far more melodic than you’d expect a song called MAD! to be. Maahsa is a 25 year old musician, artist, and singer whose honed her own unique flow.

MAD! has sad vibes, the song is explores wasted time, loyalty, and the difficulty of relationships. Maahsa’s rap style borderlines on singing as she emotes her pain.

My introduction to Maahsa was actually pretty interesting, a friend of mine who goes by Content Kev dropped me a line about a rapper who needed an actor for their music video. One thing led to another and I was featured on Maahsa’s music video for BIG GAWD.

Meeting Maasha, it was evident that she was artist with an interest in social issues and uplifting the issues she sees in the world. Maahsa highlights Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes, as well as DMX, Lil Kim, and Missy Elliot as inspirations. It’s cliched to say this in the era of Megan the Stallion and Cardi B, but Maahsa is a better rapper than the majority of men rapping. Maahsa is able to fit complex flows and speech patterns over beats that are just as nuanced.
