“Scrimmage” By Wallace Tonight! – Philly Song of the Week

Written by:

“Scrimmage” by Wallace Tonight! sounds like a fast-paced jam session mixed with hint of The Strokes. The opening chords alone make anyone listening want to immediately start bobbing their head to the rhythm of the song.

In a blog post on the Wallace Tonight website dated May 2022, they said “We are Wallace, Tonight! What began as a casual jam session has now blossomed into…well…we are not even sure yet! But we are enjoying the ride!”

The essence of that statement shines through in “Scrimmage.” At first the instrumentation sounds like a funky jam-band, but subtly a bridge arrives & you realize that the jam elements are actually fundamental structural pieces of the song, then finally the song crescendos into a panicked plea where the lead singer bellows “I THINK TOO MUCH” and “CAN YOU HELP ME NOW.”

“Scrimmage” is a well-crafted, interesting, and full song. Wallace Tonight! is making well-thought out, structurally sound music.

Listening through the Wallace Tonight! discography, it’s apparent that they have been finding their sound, and on their latest EP “Sweet Williams and The Yankee Candle Customer Service Associates” it’s apparent they found it.
