Philly Song of the Week – Verses by James Haro In Storage

Once a week the Philly Plain Dealer will be highlighting artists throughout the Philadelphia area.

For the week of June 28th, 2024 – the Philly Song of the Week is Verses by James Haro In Storage! According to the band’s Spotify profile “James Haro In Storage is a music project that began underground in a literal storage room.” Verses is the first of 3 songs on James Haro In Storage’s 2024 ep – “GO AHEAD,” but was originally released in 2023.

James Haro, himself, told the Philly Plain Dealer “I wrote emotive lyrics with music that is angsty and uplifting. Like Bright Eyes meets Blink-182. I have Mexican roots and was raised in Los Angeles now based in Philly.”

His “Bright Eyes meets Blink-182” analysis is spot on, Verses is the type of song that would fit perfectly into the 104.5 rotation. (For those of you that no longer listen to radio, 104.5 is an alternative radio station that does quite a good job, give them a try.)

Verses starts with an acoustic guitar riff, giving the impression that the entire song is going to be acoustic – the track then drops into early-2000’s chaos evoking a Motion City Soundtrack-like feel through the rest of the song. There’s some minor ska-influence in Verses, as horns join the chorus later into the song.

If you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia à la “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard , give this week’s Philly Song of the Week a shot. The music of James Haro In Storage would pair well with a long car ride to Sea Isle or Ocean City with the windows down.
