Philly Song of the Week: “Kokomo, IN” by Japanese Breakfast

With live music FINALLY coming back to the world, I wanted to highlight a group that’s going to be playing at my favorite venue, Union Transfer, for five nights from August 6th – August 11th. Japanese Breakfast is led by Michelle Zauner, who started her musical career in Philadelphia while attending Bryn Mawr college.

This week’s PSotW is Kokomo, IN by Japanese Breakfast. As one of my favorites off their latest album Jubilee, this song is a beautiful, somber ballad with haunting vocals, a violin in accompaniment , and a slide guitar solo that couldn’t be a more perfect fit for the tone of the song. This is one I’m dying to see when I catch them in August.

Their shows will be opened by two fellow Philly bands, Mannequin Pussy and Spirit of the Beehive during the five nights they return to Philly.

Each week, the Philly Plain Dealer highlights an artist in the Philly music scene. If you have a favorite song by a Philadelphia artist, submit it by tweeting to @PlainPhilly.
