Our first throwback as the Philly song of the week goes to Philly hip-hop legends Beanie Sigel and Freeway, along with some rapper named Jay-Z.
A few weeks ago I saw this tweet and I lost it. This lady could seriously be Vice President Kamala Harris’s stunt double.
Then I heard the song and realized she’s simply a Philadelphian, completely justified in her behavior. This shit playing at a Sixers game is as fitting as Fortunate Son in the background of a Vietnam flick. What We Do by Freeway is up there with Summertime and Imma Boss in terms of Philly rap anthems, however your age range will dictate if you know the song word for word or not.
A few years ago I had a graduation party, towards the end this song started to play over the speaker. Everyone from my nephew to my grandmother started rocking back and forth with one shoulder like a weird cult practice. This song is infectious, it’s emphatic, and it sounds like Philly in the Winter.
I know we usually do a song that’s up to date, but the anthems and throwbacks need love too. If you don’t like the song itself you at least got to respect the video, look at this shotty storyline, and the over-sized State Property jackets along with half the cast of The Wire.
