Did you know that for the last 33 years college baseball teams have faced off at the Phillies stadium in April? The Liberty Bell Classic has been bringing together NCAA Baseball teams to face off in Philadelphia since 1992. According to MLB.com “Originally all games were played at Veterans Stadium, but in 2004 games were played at local venues with the championship game being held at Citizens Bank Park.”
This year’s Liberty Bell Classic Championship takes place on April 21st between St. Joe’s University and UPenn at 4pm. It’s Philly vs. Philly Big 5 matchup!
Throughout March, a number of teams faced off to see who would play and this past week UPenn pummeled Lafayette to punch their ticket to the final, and St. Joe’s “came out on top in a 11-10 nail-biter over Rider on Wednesday.
This year the St. Joe’s Hawks are off to a hot start with a sterling 21-11 record and they are certainly the favorite in this year’s Liberty Bell Classic against Penn who are 11-15.
Tickets to the Liberty Bell Classic are not available online, tickets are $5 and only available at the Citizens Bank Park ticket window on April 21st, the Philadelphia Phillies told the Philly Plain Dealer.
Between St. Joe’s and UPenn there are some ball players with great potential. St. Joe’s has four players in their everyday lineup with a batting average over .300, Alex Kelsey, Blake Primrose, Richard Beggy, and Joey Gale. St. Joe’s also has a consistent bullpen rotation, anchored by Andrew Gaines and Christian Coppola who both have sub 2 ERAs.
UPenn’s standouts include Nick Spaventa whose power at the plate has been notable with 6 home runs through 26 games, and starting pitcher Marty Coyne who has maintained a 2.55 ERA through 42.1 innings pitched.
The Liberty Bell Classic is an opportunity to experience college baseball on a Major League Stage, it’s also likely the only time you’ll be able to get into Citizens Bank Park for $5.
