This week’s Philly song of the week transported me back to the early 2000s with its familiar melody, and kept my attention with it’s dynamic build and an interesting theme.
“Bunker” by Home Star is a lyric-rich nostalgia fueled indie rock song that could be played on ALT104.5 or WXPN in the blink of an eye.
Bunker begins with a simple acoustic sound and clear vocals, then builds into a 90’s alt-track that feels like it’s ripped from an American Pie soundtrack. However, the lyrics of Bunker are what really separates it from the indie tracks of the 90s.
Bunker is a song about contemplation that starts unsure and ends with confidence. The melody is slower and softer in the beginning of the song with lyrics like “we might not make it out” and “I have less faith than it sounds”, then by the end of the song lead singer Evan Lescallette is belting out “Turn around and face it.” Is the bunker literal or a metaphor? That’s up to you.
Lescallette is the founding member and songwriter of Philadelphia emo-revival band Marietta, Lescallette told the Philly Plain Dealer “Home Star is my solo project that I’ve been working on over the past several years.”
The future of Home Star is bright. Last Friday Home Star’s first album “A Binding Life” dropped and it is a must-listen. Lescalette is making thoughtful, quality music worth checking out. Home Star’s sound has a nostalgic feel, but also brings something new to the table.
There it is, your Philly song of the week – “Bunker” by Home Star.
