The Eagles made a savvy move late in the first round of the NFL draft last night, moving up one spot to select Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell at 31st overall. The Camden-area native was visibly thrilled to join the reigning Super Bowl champions, and Eagles fans should be excited to have him.

Campbell is a high upside prospect who will have a chance to hone his skills under Fangio’s scheme and Zack Baun’s tutelage.  At 6 ‘3″, 235 pounds and built like a superhero, Campbell combines pedigree with physical talent. A two-year starter at Alabama, he led the team in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks in 2024.

What really sets him apart though, is his versatility. He lined up everywhere for the Crimson Tide: off-ball linebacker, edge rusher, even taking a few snaps at safety. While the Eagles could still use help off the edge, I expect Campbell will slot in primarily as an off-ball linebacker, a role where his range and explosiveness really shine.

His precipitous fall in the draft was unusual: PFF had him as the 13th ranked prospect in the draft. Danny Kelly at The Ringer had him as his #11 ranked prospect. For Campbell to be available at 31? That’s the kind of luck Howie Roseman keeps in a glass case in his office, the same glass case he tapped two years ago when Jalen Carter fell to the Eagles. Campbell’s fall is likely due to the fact that Campbell had shoulder surgery in March, however he says he is healing well. Regardless, this pick is great value, one of the cleanest swings in the first round. I wouldn’t be shocked if Roseman keeps wheeling and dealing into Day 2.

Two players I have my eye on in the second round: Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku, a Williamstown NJ native who is an explosive pass rusher with first-round talent (whom they would certainly have to trade up to get), and Arkansas’ Landon Jackson, a hulking edge with the build and energy of an Eastern European hitman. Seriously, google this guy.

But for now, let’s take a moment to appreciate this one: Jihaad Campbell is returning to his Philadelphia-area roots. I look forward to watching Mr. Campbell don the midnight (and Kelly) green for many seasons. Welcome to Philadelphia.
