Here it is, your Philly Song of the Week: “Boozophilia” by Low Cut Connie!
Low Cut Connie, to put it simply, are South Philly’s only contemporary rock and roll sensation. Formed in 2010 and still writing and touring actively, the band harbors timeless guitar and percussion styles accompanied by the smooth yet loose and fun vocals and piano techniques of Adam Weiner.
Adam is the only consistent member of the band, more or less making Low Cut Connie a synonym for Adam Weiner. IYKYK—Adam is a South Philly resident and loves his home. I met him briefly on my birthday last year about a block from my house and when I turned around and said “Adam?!” he replied with a casual, “Hey what’s up!” I’m not about to tell you where he lives or gush over his classic no-shirt, only-suspenders look. You can find that information in other interview-style articles that have been published, or just Google it. I’m here to talk about a song that will always remind me of good times I’ve had within the neighborhood we both reside.
“Boozophilia” is a song you can (and should) dance to. It’s a song you should show your friends as you sit outside a dive bar on a summer evening enjoying a beer. It’s a song that mentions the wild and unpredictable nature of having roommates in the city, breaking teeth, getting stoned, and traveling around the Northeastern U.S., only to find your true home to be in South Philly.
The commentary of bandmates in the recording studio was not edited out, making the song genuinely fun and entertaining to listen to. You can hear “woo’s” and laughter from members as well as clapping and screaming (unintelligible) things as the band has the time of their lives. You can’t be sad while listening to this song as it’s a burst of mania-bordering happiness. Not only am I a fan of Low Cut Connie, even Barack Obama added this song to his Presidential Playlist in 2015. “If you can’t get it here, you can’t get it anywhere!” I assume Adam was referring to vegan meatballs and a $4 citywide.
